Good Mexican food on the east coast?
A long time ago, in a place not too far away .... the east coast of the US was never known for its Mexican food. When I was growing up in New York City some years ago, the ethnic cuisine that I encountered consisted mainly of Chinese food, Spanish to some degree, definitely Japanese cuisine and also a lot of Italian although, that's really more of a New York thing. Back then, the only semblance of Latino cuisine which I was lucky enough to partake in were from my friends' homes and their moms' cooking and, you know what, I really enjoyed it!
Within the last 10 to 15 years, there seemed to be an uptick of Latin American cuisine, not just in New York but in the surrounding suburbs as well which basically includes New Jersey even though it's technically another state. Many of these places brought foods and flavors which were once reserved only to those in the west and southwestern parts of the United States. I'm talking authentic foods like tacos, enchiladas, carne asada, al pastor and different versions of ceviche just to name a few. Now they're here and I get to enjoy them all and I don't even have to travel very far. Actually, there's a good Mexican place around the corner from where I'm living right now but I haven't ventured in there yet since my go-to place is still this little place in North Brunswick, New Jersey called Lucy's Kitchen.
Lucy's is nothing fancy and that's the way I like it. It's a small place with big flavors and they never disappoint. The owners are very friendly and they go out of their way to make sure that you're happy with your food - you can't ask for anything more. If you ever get a chance and you're in the area, make sure to stop by and enjoy their delicious food. If you're coming for dinner, bring a bottle of wine (or 2) since it's BYOB.
